Special Olympics Manitoba and the Winnipeg Wine Festival
Welcome to the continuing success story of Special Olympics Manitoba (SOM) and the Winnipeg Wine Festival. At Special Olympics, it is our goal to not only benefit today’s athletes with an intellectual disability but also the athletes of tomorrow. With close to 1 million dollars raised to date from the Winnipeg Wine Festival, Manitoba has been able to increase our grassroots programming base while maintaining the quality of training required to compete on both the National and International stages. At the grassroots level, the organization continues to grow with 130 programs providing services throughout the Province. It is from these programs, that athletes choose to compete in one of the nineteen sports offered by Special Olympics Manitoba. Programs are offered for athletes from the ages of 2 years old and up. Last year, SOM provided opportunities for over 1900 athletes to enrich their lives through sport. Recently, a team of eight athletes and one coach have returned from the International Special Olympics Summer Games in Shanghai with eleven medals. In addition Manitoba has prepared a team of 67 to attend the National Winter Games in Quebec City. Based on athletic achievement, at these Games, athletes will be selected to attend the 2009 World Special Olympics Winter Games in Idaho. These opportunities provided to our athletes would not be possible without the support of our events such as the Winnipeg Wine Festival. Through hard work and powerful partnerships, it is the generous support of the community that provides on-going strength to Special Olympics Manitoba, thereby, giving us the opportunity to better serve our athletes. —Simon Mundey
